GED

GED is a group of five subject tests that would give thecandidate the equivalent of a high school diploma. The diploma is certified by the American Council on Education (ACE). The test is for both US citizens and non-US citizens. Those who take the test need to be 16 years old or older.

The five GED subjects are tested in the form of multiple-choice questions.

  1. The Writing test is divided into two parts. Part 1 consists of 50 questions, and part 2 is an essay with one assigned topic. The essay must not be off topic and has to meet the minimum requirements. There are 120 minutes allocated for the writing test.
  2. The Social Studies test examines thecandidate’s comprehension of the text. The test consists of 50 multiple-choice questions, and there are 85 minutes allocated for this section.
  3. The Science test covers topics such as life, physical, earth and space sciences. The candidates are asked questions based on diagrams, and the test consists of 50 multiple-choice questions. There are 95 minutes allocated for this section.
  4. The Reading test examines the candidate’s ability to read and understand a series of texts. There are 5 fiction and 2 non-fiction passages. The fiction passages include plays and poems, while the non-fiction passages can include letters and newspaper articles. There are 65minutes allocated to complete the 40 multiple-choice questions.
  5. The Mathematics test examines the candidates’numerical ability and consists of basic questions on additions, subtractions, multiplications, divisions, fractions, graphs and statistics. There are 40 multiple-choice questions and 10 questions where the candidates need to provide a short answer. There are 90 minutes allocated for this section.

Each of the 5 GED tests has a maximum of 800 points. The minimum requirement to pass a test is 410 points. The minimum requirement to pass all five tests is a combined total of 2250 points. Anybody who is interested in taking the test can register online at http://www.prometric.com/GED/default.htm. Registration is possible throughout the year. If candidates do not meet the minimum requirement, they can retake the test after a 90-day period.

The Ministry of Education in Thailand recognizes the GED qualification as being equivalent to a Thai high school diploma.
